Massive Mario and Sonic Fanart Feature

Look back fifteen-twenty years ago. It was the face-off of the '90s: Mario versus Sonic. The two mascots from the main companies of the time, Sega and Nintendo, were always compared to one another. There were countless debates over who was the better mascot. Lines were drawn, and sides were taken. Whoever would have thought they’d see the day that both Mario and Sonic would team up in a game? Most gamers would have laughed in your face if, during the era of the Genesis and SNES, you had suggested the two systems' mascots would one day star in a collaboration game of any sort.  The two have been rivals for a long time, stretching all the way back to Sonic’s debut. The idea of Nintendo and Sega collaborating could not have been further away.

About ten years later in the early 2000s when Sega became a software only company, having Sonic games on multiple consoles became a reality, especially since many of those games were exclusive to Nintendo consoles. But when all that happened, it opened up the possibility of Mario and Sonic being in a game together. Fans began to expect a Mario and Sonic crossover, but no one expected it to be in a game that would coincide with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The unthinkable had happened. Fanboys who grew up in the '80s and '90s siding with either Sega or Nintendo had a real dilemma here - "Is it right to play a game which has both Sonic and Mario in?". A game developed by Sega and Nintento for play on a Nintendo console?

     Sega  decided to go along with the IOC's mission to promote a sporting spirit and wanted to interest young people in the Olympics. They decided to base the sports game around its characters that "young people love and are very iconic" instead of creating a more realistic simulation. Sega then requested that Nintendo should collaborate with them and that the game would be a matchup between the two most iconic video game franchises of all time: Mario and Sonic. The game even received a sequel, Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games, which will be coming out in a few days.
