I wrote a speculation journal for the Season 3 finale, so I’ll write one for Season 4 as well. There’s a little more than two weeks left until Season 4 airs.
I wish I were watching more shows with new episodes and actual seasons so I could write these journals more often. For instance, I watch The Lion Guard and Elena of Avalor, but new episodes are released sporadically (roughly one episode every three weeks) rather than on a regular schedule.
-Season 4 will begin with a scene where Phoenix is captured by the new antagonist Dr. Neo and escapes, or Dr. Neo will attempt to capture him. This will happen in the first episode in some form or another (either the episode will begin with Phoenix in Dr. Neo’s capture, he will get captured at some point in the episode, or Dr. Neo will try.) Assuming that Dr. Neo is at least somewhat competent, it would make sense for something to happen early that establishes him as a threat. Also, in the Season 4 trailer, there’s a literal blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment where (what appears to be) one of Phoenix’s fire arrows narrowly misses Dr. Neo. Speaking of Dr. Neo, I have a feeling the anime will use the plot point from the manga that he's actually an old man who wears a wig and has a facelift.
-Arsène Lupin will appear. I’m honestly surprised he didn’t appear in Season 3; I would think the producers would want to promote the Kaito Joker video game that he appears as a major character in. I absolutely love his character design, so I really want to see him appear in the anime.
-Either a Halloween-themed chapter or a Christmas-themed chapter will be adapted, or both. Given that Season 4 will run through October until the end of December, I’d be surprised not to see either.
-The chapter “Lost Ones of the Starry Sky” where Joker and Hachi rescue an alien from a laboratory will be adapted, but with Phoenix and Dr. Neo. Chances are, this will happen towards the end of Season 4. It’ll have to be changed pretty dramatically, but many other chapters were changed dramatically when adapted for the anime (and almost always for the better.)
-Like how Season 2 made some minor changes/additions to the Season 1 and 2 opening, Season 4 will make some minor changes/additions to the opening, most likely in the beginning part showing the different characters (the one-episode characters will get swapped out with Dr. Neo and whatever new bounty hunters Devil’s Fang will have.)
-The “President D is Dump” theory will be confirmed. There was a noticeable hint at the end of Season 3 Episode 10 that implies this, and at this point, I’d be very surprised if he isn’t Dump. I imagine his motivation is that he was lonely after Spade left him to join Joker and Queen, and after growing up bitter and lonely he wanted to get revenge on Spade by catching Joker and Queen as well as Spade (though so far we haven’t seen Devil’s Fang target anyone other than Joker, it could be happening off-screen.)
-At the end of Season 4, Joker will find the “legendary ancient space treasure” and will either give it to Phoenix or promise that he can have it after Joker dies. Comparatively that wouldn’t be too long a wait; Phoenix has already been on Earth for 10,000 years, so waiting another 50-60 years (or less) wouldn’t be too long. This would also let the writers keep Phoenix around for future seasons (assuming there will be future seasons.) Either way, Hoshi will most likely stay with Joker and Hachi.
-Said “legendary ancient space treasure” will be something sentimental, worthless to anyone other than Phoenix, or ugly/plain enough that Joker won’t find any value in it. When Joker got excited about the treasure in the season 3 finale, Akai looked bewildered and gave him a noncommittal answer. It was a very strange reaction, even for Akai.
-This is more wishful thinking than speculation, but I’d love to see the chapter “Phoenix’s Challenge” (my translation of the title) adapted into an episode. In this chapter, Phoenix stops Joker mid-theft and challenges him to a baseball game (it makes just as much sense in context.) I’d be kind of surprised if the anime adapted this chapter, since Phoenix has already been established as a character, but it would be nice to see it animated.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I discovered is now an English dub of Kaito Joker…in Malaysia. I always had a feeling there would be an English dub someday, and given that Kaito Joker is being dubbed and aired on the Malaysian version of Disney XD, it’s entirely possible it could be eventually broadcast in other countries (or will find its way onto the internet…) Disney has dubbed (or at least broadcasts) other anime, including Doraemon and Yo-kai Watch, so it’s not a longshot. Also, it sounds like the English voices for Kaito Joker were recorded in the United States (either that or Malaysian English accents are remarkably similar to American accents.)
